Ghazal 1: O cupbearer, pass the cup around and hand it on
O cupbearer, pass the cup around and hand it on,
for love seemed easy at first, but then the hardships came.
For the scent of musk the morning breeze may loose from those tresses,
how much blood the curl of those dark locks has spilled in hearts!
What safety or joy is there for me at the beloved's halting place, when every moment
the caravan bell cries out: bind on your loads!
Stain the prayer mat with wine if the Magian elder tells you to,
for the wayfarer is not ignorant of the road and the customs of its stations.
The dark night, the fear of waves, a whirlpool so dreadful:
how can they know our state, those who travel light along the shore?
All my work, through self-will, has ended in ill repute;
how can a secret stay hidden when gatherings are made of it?
If you long for his presence, Hafez, never be absent from him;
when you meet the one you love, let the world go and forget it.
Interpretation of the fal
What looked easy at the start has now shown its difficulties. Do not lose heart: the hardship means you are truly on the road. Take the advice of someone experienced, and do not mind the judgement of those who watch safely from the shore. Keep your whole attention on what you love and you will reach it.
