Ghazal 116: Whoever keeps the beauty and the down of the friend before his eyes
Whoever keeps the beauty and the down of the friend before his eyes,
it is certain that he has gained the fruit of sight.
Like the pen, on the road of his command we have laid down
our head in obedience; perhaps he will lift it with the sword.
Only that one, like the candle, was given leave for union with you
who under your sword has a new head every moment.
The hand that reached to kiss your foot was the hand of one
who, like the threshold, always keeps his head at this door.
I am weary of dry asceticism; where is the pure wine,
whose scent keeps my brain always fresh?
If you have nothing else from wine, is this not enough,
that for a moment it keeps you unaware of reason's whisperings?
One who never set a foot outside the road of piety
is now on the road, bound for the tavern.
The broken heart of Hafez will carry to the dust,
like the tulip, the brand of a desire that it bears on its liver.
Interpretation of the fal
The eye of your heart has opened to beauty, and that in itself is a great gain. You have stayed obedient and steady on this road, and that steadiness will bring you to your goal. You are tired of dryness and of being hard on yourself; give your heart a little freedom. You carry a long-held desire that will stay with you to the end.
