Ghazal 118: The one who holds a cup in his hand
The one who holds a cup in his hand
holds the kingship of Jamshid for ever.
The water from which Khizr gained life,
look for it in the tavern, for the cup holds it.
Leave the thread of your life to the cup,
for that thread takes its order from it.
We and wine, the ascetics and piety:
let us see which the friend has a mind for.
Apart from your lip, O cupbearer, there is
no one in this round who holds his desire.
The narcissus has all the ways of drunkenness
on loan from your fair eye.
The mention of your face and tress is, for my heart,
a litany that it keeps morning and evening.
On the wounded breasts of those in pain
your ruby lip holds the full measure of salt.
In the pit of your chin, O soul, like Hafez,
your beauty holds two hundred slaves.
Interpretation of the fal
Whoever has a glad, clear heart is the king of their own time. Look for happiness in this moment and in a cheerful heart, not far away. You have chosen the way of the heart and others have chosen theirs; let the friend decide which is better. Their memory is with you morning and evening, and it keeps you alive.
