Ghazal 128: There is no beauty in the city who can carry off our heart

نیست در شهر نگاری که دل ما ببرد
بختم ار یار شود رختم از این جا ببرد

کو حریفی کش سرمست که پیش کرمش
عاشق سوخته‌دل، نام تمنا ببرد

باغبانا ز خزان، بی‌خبرت می‌بینم
آه از آن روز که بادت گل رعنا ببرد

رهزن دهر نخفته‌ست، مشو ایمن از او
اگر امروز نبرده‌ست که فردا ببرد

در خیال، این همه لعبت به هوس می‌بازم
بو که صاحب‌نظری نام تماشا ببرد

علم و فضلی که به چل سال دلم جمع آورد
ترسم آن نرگس مستانه به یغما ببرد

بانگ گاوی، چه صدا باز دهد؟ عشوه مخر
سامری کیست که دست از ید بیضا ببرد؟

جام مینایی می، سد ره تنگ‌دلی‌ست
منه از دست که سیل غمت از جا ببرد

راه عشق ار چه کمینگاه کمانداران است
هر که دانسته رود صرفه ز اعدا ببرد

حافظ! ار جان طلبد غمزهٔ مستانهٔ یار
خانه از غیر بپرداز و بهل تا ببرد

There is no beauty in the city who can carry off our heart;
if my fortune favours me, it will carry my baggage away from here.

Where is a gracious, light-hearted companion before whose generosity
the heart-burned lover may bring up the name of his wish?

Gardener, I see you unaware of the autumn;
alas for the day when the wind carries off your lovely rose.

The highwayman of time is not asleep; do not feel safe from him.
If he has not carried it off today, tomorrow he will.

In fancy I play at all these puppets out of desire;
perhaps someone with insight will speak of the spectacle.

The learning and merit my heart gathered in forty years,
I fear that drunken narcissus eye will carry them off as plunder.

What sound does the lowing of the calf give back? Do not be taken in.
Who is the Samiri, to carry the day over the White Hand?

The glass cup of wine is a dam on the road of a straitened heart;
do not put it down, or the flood of grief will carry you away.

Though the road of love is the ambush of the archers,
whoever goes knowingly will carry the advantage over his enemies.

Hafez, if the friend's drunken glance asks for your life,
clear the house of everything else and let her carry it off.
