Ghazal 12: The moon of beauty takes its light from your shining face
The moon of beauty takes its light from your shining face;
loveliness takes its lustre from the well of your chin.
My soul, come to the lip, intends to see you;
shall it turn back or come out? What is your command?
No one in the age of your narcissus eye gained any share of safety;
better they do not sell modesty to those drunk on you.
Our sleepy fortune may yet awaken,
since your shining face has splashed water on its eyes.
Send with the morning breeze a posy from your cheek;
perhaps we may catch a scent from the dust of your garden.
Long life and your desire to you, cupbearers of Jamshid's feast,
though our cup was not filled with wine in your round.
The heart is working ruin; let the heart's keeper know.
Take care, friends: my life and your lives are at stake.
When, O Lord, will this wish come to hand, that they be joined:
our collected mind and your scattered tress?
Keep your skirt clear of dust and blood as you pass by us,
for on this road the slain are many, sacrifices to you.
Hafez is saying a prayer; listen, and say amen:
may your sugar-scattering ruby lip be our daily bread.
Morning breeze, tell the people of the city of Yazd from us:
may the heads of the ungrateful be the ball for your polo stick.
Though we are far from the carpet of nearness, our devotion is not far;
we are the servant of your king and the singer of your praise.
O king of kings with the lofty star, for God's sake grant an aid,
that like a star I may kiss the dust of your court.
Interpretation of the fal
You are far from someone you love, or from a person of standing on whom you have pinned your hopes, and you are waiting for a sign. Your sleeping fortune is about to wake. Distance is no barrier: show your loyalty and effort, and say what you want. Your prayer will be answered and the meeting will take place.
