Ghazal 138: May he be remembered who, when he set out, did not remember us

May he be remembered who, when he set out, did not remember us,
who did not gladden our grieving heart with a farewell.

That young man of good fortune, who wrote the mark of good and of favour,
I do not know why he did not free an old slave.

Let us wash the paper robe in bloody water, for the sky
did not guide us to the foot of the banner of justice.

My heart, in hope that a sound might perhaps reach you,
raised laments in these mountains that Farhad never raised.

Since you took your shade away from the meadow, the bird of dawn
has made no nest in the curl of the box tree's tress.

It would be fitting if the courier breeze learned its work from you,
for the wind never moved more nimbly than this.

The pen of the dresser of creation draws no picture of his desire
for anyone who did not confess this God-given beauty.

Minstrel, change the mode and play the way of Iraq,
for by that road the friend went and did not remember us.

The song of Hafez is the ghazals of Iraq;
who has heard this heart-burning mode and not cried out?

Interpretation of the fal

Someone left without a farewell and without a thought for you, and it has hurt you. You expected kindness and relief from them and did not receive it. Your appeals have not reached their ears so far. Demanding justice from them will not help: give your sorrow another outlet, in writing or some art, and remember them without bitterness.
