Ghazal 149: My heart takes no road but love of the moon-faced
My heart takes no road but love of the moon-faced;
I advise it from every side, but it does not take.
For God's sake, adviser, talk of cup and wine,
for no picture takes hold in our fancy better than this.
Come, rose-cheeked cupbearer, bring the coloured wine,
for no thought takes root in us better than this.
I carry the flask in secret and people suppose it a book;
a wonder if the fire of this deceit does not take hold of the book.
One day I will burn this patched cloak of mine,
which the wine sellers' elder would not take for a single cup.
The friends find such clearness in his ruby wine
because no image but truth takes in that essence.
A head and eyes so charming, and you say: turn your eyes away?
Go, for this empty sermon does not take hold in my head.
The adviser of the rends, who is at war with fate's decree,
I see his heart is very cramped; perhaps he takes no cup.
I laugh in the midst of weeping, for like the candle in this gathering
I have a tongue of fire, yet it does not take.
How finely you hunted my heart; I glory in your drunken eye,
for no one takes wild birds better than this.
The talk is of our need and the beloved's self-sufficiency;
what use is spell-casting, O heart, when it does not take on the heart-stealer?
One day, like Alexander, I shall get that mirror into my hand,
whether this fire takes for a time or does not take.
For God's sake, some pity, O rich one, for the dervish of your street
knows no other door and takes no other road.
With verse so fresh and sweet, I wonder at the king of kings,
why he does not cover Hafez from head to foot in gold.
Interpretation of the fal
Your heart will take only one road and no one's advice has any effect on it. You are tired of concealment and pretence and want to be yourself. Pleading and devices have no effect on the one you love, because they have no need of you. Even so, you will not give up seeking, and you know no door but this one. Your talent deserves recognition.
