Ghazal 158: I, and denial of wine? What sort of tale is that?

I, and denial of wine? What sort of tale is that?
Surely I have this much sense and sufficiency.

Until now I did not know the way to the tavern;
otherwise, how far would our modesty have gone?

The ascetic with pride and prayer, and I with drunkenness and need:
let us see with which of us your favour lies.

If the ascetic does not find the way to being a rend, he is excused;
love is a matter that depends on guidance.

I who night after night waylaid piety with drum and harp,
shall I now bring my head to the road? What a tale that would be!

I am the servant of the Magian elder, who freed me from ignorance;
whatever our elder does is kindness itself.

Last night I did not sleep for this grief, that a friend was saying:
if Hafez is drunk, there is cause for complaint.

Interpretation of the fal

Do not deny the path your heart has chosen or pretend to be someone else. Everyone has their own way; forgive those who do not understand yours. You cannot go back to what you were, and there is no need to. Trust the person who guides you. Do not be upset by a friend's criticism; rest easy.
