Ghazal 175: The morning breeze came to congratulate the old wine seller
The morning breeze came to congratulate the old wine seller:
the season of joy, pleasure, delight and drinking has come.
The air has the breath of the Messiah and the wind opens the musk pod;
the tree has turned green and the bird has burst into song.
The spring wind so lit the oven of the tulip
that the bud was drowned in sweat and the rose came to the boil.
Listen to me with the ear of understanding and strive for pleasure,
for this word came to my ear at dawn from a hidden voice.
Come back from thoughts of division, that you may be collected,
for the rule is that when Ahriman goes, the angel comes.
I do not know what the free lily heard from the bird of morning,
that with ten tongues it came to be silent.
What place has an outsider's company in a gathering of friends?
Cover the top of the cup, for the cloak-wearer has come.
Hafez is going from the dervish lodge to the tavern;
perhaps he has come to his senses from the drunkenness of hypocritical piety.
Interpretation of the fal
A time of gladness and renewal has come; make use of it. Let go of scattered thoughts and you will find calm: when what is bad leaves, what is good takes its place. Keep your secret and your pleasures from outsiders. You have come out of pretence, and that is waking up, not going astray.
