Ghazal 177: Not everyone who lights up a face knows how to win hearts

Not everyone who lights up a face knows how to win hearts;
not everyone who makes a mirror knows the art of Alexander.

Not everyone who tilts his cap and sits up fiercely
knows how to wear the crown and the custom of leadership.

Do not serve like beggars on condition of a wage,
for the friend knows for himself how to care for a servant.

I am the slave of the spirit of that comfort-burning rend
who in a beggar's guise knows alchemy.

Faithfulness and keeping one's word are good, if you will learn them;
otherwise, everyone you see knows how to be cruel.

I lost my mad heart, and I did not know
that a child of Adam knows the ways of a fairy.

There are a thousand points here finer than a hair;
not everyone who shaves his head knows the way of the qalandar.

The centre of my sight turns upon your mole,
for it is the jeweller who knows the worth of a single pearl.

Whoever became king of the beautiful by stature and face
will take the world, if he knows how to deal justly.

The one who is aware of Hafez's heart-winning verse
is the one who knows grace of nature and how to speak in Dari.
