Ghazal 18: Cupbearer, may the coming of the festival be blessed for you
Cupbearer, may the coming of the festival be blessed for you,
and may the promises you made not slip your memory.
I marvel that through this time of separation
you took your heart from your companions, and your heart allowed it.
Give our respects to the daughter of the vine; say: come out,
for our breath and resolve have set you free from bonds.
The joy of the company lies in your step and your arrival;
may grief be the lot of the heart that does not wish you glad.
Thanks be to God that the plunder of autumn found no breach
in your garden of jasmine, cypress, rose and box tree.
Far be the evil eye, for from that scattering you were brought back
by your renowned star and inborn fortune.
Hafez, do not let go the good fortune of this Noah's ark,
or the flood of events will sweep away your foundation.
Interpretation of the fal
A time of separation and scattering is over, and days of celebration and reunion are arriving. What you had has come through unharmed. Keep the promises you made, and value this chance and the friends who are your shelter. If you hold on to that support, events will not harm you.
