Ghazal 184: Last night I saw the angels knocking at the tavern door

Last night I saw the angels knocking at the tavern door;
they kneaded the clay of Adam and cast it into the cup.

The dwellers in the sanctuary of the veil and chastity of the angelic world
drank the wine of drunkenness with me, who sit by the road.

The sky could not bear the burden of the Trust;
they cast the lot for the task in the name of me, the madman.

Excuse the war of the seventy-two sects, all of them;
since they did not see the truth, they took the road of fable.

Thanks be to God that peace has come between me and Him;
the Sufis, dancing, drained the cup of thanksgiving.

Fire is not that at whose flame the candle laughs;
fire is what they set to the harvest of the moth.

No one has drawn the veil from the face of thought like Hafez,
since they first combed the tresses of speech with the pen.

Interpretation of the fal

This is a lofty and good fal: a great responsibility or a special gift has fallen to you that others were unable to carry; accept it and value it. Do not be distressed by people's quarrels over belief, and forgive them. Peace has been made between you and what you were seeking. True love is a fire that consumes everything one has.
