Ghazal 191: Who is there that out of generosity will keep faith with us
Who is there that out of generosity will keep faith with us,
and for an evildoer like me will do one moment's good?
First, with the sound of flute and reed, let him bring his message to the heart,
and then with one measure of wine keep faith with me.
The heart-stealer by whom my soul was worn away, from whom my heart's desire never opened,
one cannot despair of him; it may be he will give comfort.
I said: "As long as I have lived I have not undone one knot of that tress."
He said: "I ordered it to play the trickster with you."
The ill-tempered wearer of wool has never caught the scent of love;
tell him a hint of its drunkenness, so that he gives up sobriety.
For a nameless beggar like me, such a friend is hard to win;
when does a sultan take secret pleasure with a rend of the market?
From that tress full of twists and curls it is easy if I suffer injustice;
what grief do bond and chain bring to one who plays the bold rogue?
The army of grief has grown beyond number; I ask help of fortune,
that Fakhr al-Din Abd al-Samad may perhaps share my sorrow.
With that eye of his so full of wiles, Hafez, do not make for him,
for that night-coloured tress of his plays many a trick.
Interpretation of the fal
You are waiting for kindness and loyalty from someone who has hurt you so far; do not lose hope, for they may yet make amends. The difficulties on this road are a test of your steadfastness, not a sign of failure. Your sorrows have multiplied, but help will come from somewhere you do not expect. Even so, do not be taken in by appearances, and go forward with care.
