Ghazal 193: At our play of glances the uninformed stand bewildered

در نظربازی ما، بی‌خبران، حیران‌اند
من، چنینم که نمودم؛ دگر ایشان دانند

عاقلان، نقطهٔ پرگار وجودند ولی
عشق داند که در این دایره، سرگردان‌اند

جلوه‌گاه رخ او، دیدهٔ من، تنها نیست
ماه و خورشید، همین آینه می‌گردانند

عهد ما با لب شیرین‌دهنان بست خدا
ما، همه، بنده و این قوم، خداوندان‌اند

مفلسانیم و هوای می و مطرب داریم
آه اگر خرقهٔ پشمین به گرو نستانند!

وصل خورشید به شب‌پرهٔ اعمی نرسد
که در آن آینه، صاحب‌نظران، حیران‌اند

لاف عشق و گله از یار؟ زهی لاف دروغ!
عشق‌بازان چنین، مستحق هجران‌اند

مگرم چشم سیاه تو بیاموزد کار
ورنه مستوری و مستی، همه‌کس نتوانند

گر به نزهتگه ارواح برد بوی تو، باد
عقل و جان، گوهر هستی به نثار افشانند

زاهد ار رندی «حافظ» نکند فهم، چه شد؟
دیو بگریزد از آن قوم که قرآن خوانند

گر شوند آگه از اندیشهٔ ما، مغ‌بچگان
بعد از این، خرقهٔ صوفی به گرو نستانند

At our play of glances the uninformed stand bewildered;
I am as I have shown myself; the rest they know.

The wise are the centre point of the compass of existence, but
love knows that within this circle they wander lost.

My eye is not the only place where his face is displayed;
moon and sun turn this same mirror.

God bound our covenant to the lips of the sweet-mouthed;
we are all slaves, and these people are lords.

We are penniless and long for wine and minstrel;
alas if they will not take the woollen cloak in pawn!

Union with the sun does not reach the blind bat,
for in that mirror the people of vision stand bewildered.

A boast of love and a complaint of the friend? What a lying boast!
Lovers of that kind deserve separation.

Perhaps your black eye will teach me the art,
otherwise not everyone can manage to be veiled and drunk at once.

If the wind carries your scent to the pleasure-ground of spirits,
reason and soul will scatter the jewel of being as an offering.

If the ascetic does not understand Hafez's rend ways, what of it?
The demon flees from the people who recite the Quran.

If the Magian youths become aware of our thought,
after this they will not take the Sufi's cloak in pawn.
