Ghazal 194: The jasmine-scented, when they sit down, lay the dust of grief

The jasmine-scented, when they sit down, lay the dust of grief;
the fairy-faced, when they contend, carry off the heart's peace.

When they bind hearts to the saddle-strap of cruelty, they bind them fast;
when they loosen their ambergris tresses, they scatter souls.

When once in a lifetime they sit a moment with us, they rise;
and when they rise, they plant the sapling of longing in the mind.

When they come upon the tears of the recluses, they find pearls;
they would not turn the face of love from those who rise at dawn, if they knew.

When they laugh, they make pomegranate rubies rain from my eye;
when they look, they read the hidden secret in my face.

As for whoever thinks the cure of the lover's pain is easy:
those who busy their thought with devising a cure are left helpless.

Those who, like Mansur, attain their desire are raised on the gallows;
when they call Hafez to this court, they drive him away.

In this Presence, when the longing bring their need, they are met with disdain,
for with this pain, if they are set on a cure, they are left helpless.

Interpretation of the fal

You are dealing with people whose presence brings calm and whose leaving brings longing, and whose affection does not last. There is no easy remedy for what troubles your heart, and it will not be solved by planning and calculation. Do not be hurt by indifference: on this road, meeting disdain with humble asking is the custom. Instead of looking for a quick cure, practise patience and rise early to pray.
