Ghazal 195: Those who wear crowns are slaves of your drunken narcissus
Those who wear crowns are slaves of your drunken narcissus;
the sober are ruined by the wine of your ruby.
The east wind told on you and my tears told on me;
otherwise lover and beloved are keepers of secrets.
When you pass beneath your double tress, look
what mourners there are on your right and on your left!
Pass like the east wind over the violet bed and see
what restless ones there are from the tyranny of your tress!
Paradise is our portion, O knower of God, be off!
For it is the sinners who are deserving of grace.
I am not the only one who sings ghazals to that rose of a cheek,
for on every side your nightingales are thousands.
Take me by the hand, O Khizr of blessed footstep, for I
go on foot and my fellow travellers are riders.
Come to the tavern and turn your face crimson;
do not go to the cloister, for there are those whose deeds are black.
May Hafez never be freed from that curling tress,
for those bound in your lasso are the ones who are saved.
Interpretation of the fal
What has taken your heart has captivated many others too, and your secret is out. Do not despair over your lapses: forgiveness belongs to those who know their own shortcomings. If you have fallen behind your companions, ask a caring guide for help. Your attachment is a means of salvation, not a chain.
