Ghazal 205: As long as there is name and trace of tavern and wine
As long as there is name and trace of tavern and wine,
our head will be dust on the road of the Magian elder.
The ring of the Magian elder has been in my ear since eternity;
we are what we were, and so it will remain.
When you pass by our tomb, ask for a blessing,
for it will be the place of pilgrimage of the rends of the world.
Be off, self-regarding ascetic, for from my eye and yours
the secret of this veil is hidden, and hidden it will remain.
My lover-slaying Turk went out drunk today;
whose blood will be flowing from the eyes next?
My eye, at that moment when out of longing for you it lays its head in the grave,
will keep watching until the dawn of the resurrection.
If the fortune of Hafez goes on helping in this fashion,
the tress of the beloved will be in the hands of others.
Interpretation of the fal
Stay firm on the path and the conviction you have held from the beginning: your constancy will bring you a good name. Do not argue with those who think they know better than everyone, for the secret of things is revealed to no one. But do not rely on luck alone; if you sit idle, what you want will go to others.
