Ghazal 207: Be it remembered: when the head of your street was my dwelling
Be it remembered: when the head of your street was my dwelling,
and my eye drew its light from the dust of your door.
Upright like the lily and the rose, through the effect of pure company,
what was in your heart was on my tongue.
When the heart was quoting meanings from the elder, Reason,
love was explaining whatever was difficult for it.
Alas for the tyranny and oppression that are in this place of snares!
Alas for the burning and the longing that were in that gathering!
It was in my heart never to be without the friend;
what can be done? My striving and my heart's were in vain.
Last night, in memory of my companions, I went to the tavern;
I saw the wine jar, with blood in its heart and its feet in clay.
I wandered far to ask the cause of the pain of separation;
the mufti, Reason, was without sense in this question.
Truly, the turquoise seal-ring of Abu Ishaq
shone well, but it was a fortune that hurried away.
Did you see, Hafez, the cackling laugh of that strutting partridge,
who was heedless of the talons of the falcon of fate?
Interpretation of the fal
You are thinking of a time when you were close to your heart's desire. That time has passed, and the effort to keep it came to nothing; do not blame yourself. Reason has no answer for the pain of separation. Remember that every splendour and joy passes quickly, so do not be proud of what you have, and do not forget what fate may bring.
