Ghazal 220: From the eye the blood of the heart runs all over our face

From the eye the blood of the heart runs all over our face;
what passes over our face from the eye, how can I say?

We have hidden a longing within our breast;
if our heart goes to the wind, it will go because of that longing.

The sun of the east will tear its garment out of envy
if my moon, who nurtures love, goes out in a robe.

We have laid our face on the dust of the friend's road;
it is right if a friend walks over our face.

The water of the eye is a flood, and whoever passes by,
even if his heart is of stone, will be swept from his place.

Night and day we have a quarrel with the water of our eyes:
why does it take that road to the head of his street?

Hafez goes always to the street of the tavern with a sincere heart,
as the Sufis who keep the cloister go in purity.

Interpretation of the fal

You have hidden a wish in your heart that has taken away your peace, and there is a danger of staking everything you have on it. Your tears and your suffering do not stay hidden, and they move other people's hearts too. Humility before a friend is no fault. Whatever road you take, take it with a sincere heart: that sincerity is what gives it worth.
