Ghazal 222: Whoever goes away from the head of your street in weariness

Whoever goes away from the head of your street in weariness,
his affairs will not go forward, and in the end he will go in shame.

A caravan whose escort is the protection of God
will halt in splendour and travel on in majesty.

The wayfarer finds his way to the friend by the light of guidance,
for he arrives nowhere if he travels in error.

At the end of your life take your desire from wine and the beloved;
what a pity for hours that pass entirely in idleness!

O guide of the heart that has lost its way, for God's sake, some help,
for the stranger, if he cannot find the road, goes by a guide.

The verdict on soberness and drunkenness depends wholly on the ending;
no one has known in what state he will go at the last.

Hafez, bring to hand a cup from the spring of wisdom;
it may be that the mark of ignorance will go from the tablet of your heart.

Interpretation of the fal

Do not turn back in discouragement from the road you have taken: whoever gives up out of weariness gets nowhere and ends in shame. Your journey or undertaking is under God's protection and will end well. Ask a knowledgeable guide for help, and do not let your time pass in idleness. Do not be quick to judge anyone: it is the ending that counts.
