Ghazal 232: I am resolved that, if it lies within my power

I am resolved that, if it lies within my power,
I will set my hand to a work by which sorrow comes to an end.

The privacy of the heart is no place for the company of opposites;
when the demon goes out, the angel comes in.

The company of rulers is the darkness of the longest night;
seek light from the sun, and it may be that it will rise.

At the door of the world's lords who have no generosity,
how long will you sit wondering when the master will come out?

Do not give up beggary, for you will find a treasure
through the glance of a wayfarer who passes by.

The righteous and the wicked have each displayed their wares;
let us see who is accepted and who finds favour.

Nightingale, lover, ask for long life, for in the end
the garden will turn green and the rose branch come into flower.

The heedlessness of Hafez in this small house is no wonder;
whoever has gone to the tavern comes back unaware.

Interpretation of the fal

It is time to set to work yourself so that the sorrow can end. Clear your heart of conflicting thoughts, so that there is room for good to enter. Nothing is gained at the doors of the powerful who lack generosity: look for light elsewhere. Do not give up humility and asking; relief will come through someone you do not expect. Be patient: spring is coming.
