Ghazal 239: The good news has come that spring is here and the green has sprouted

The good news has come that spring is here and the green has sprouted;
if the stipend arrives, it will be spent on roses and wine.

The whistling of the birds has risen; where is the flagon of wine?
The nightingale has fallen to lamenting; who drew the veil from the rose?

What pleasure will he find in the fruits of paradise
who has never bitten the apple of a beauty's chin?

Do not complain of sorrow, for on the path of seeking
no one who did not bear hardship ever arrived at ease.

Pick a rose today from the face of the moon-like cupbearer,
for around the cheek of the garden the down of violets has sprouted.

The cupbearer's glance has so carried my heart away
that I have no heart left for talk with anyone else.

I will burn this patched cloak, many-coloured as a rose,
for the old wine seller would not buy it for a single draught.

Spring is passing; O dispenser of justice, attend to us,
for the season has gone and Hafez has not yet tasted wine.

Interpretation of the fal

A time of joy and freshness has come, and you should not spend it on complaint and sorrow. No ease is won without effort. The opportunity is short and passing: make the most of today and do not leave things until tomorrow. If you need someone's help to benefit from this chance, ask for it without delay.
