Ghazal 244: Companions, undo the knot of the friend's tress

معاشران! گره از زلف یار باز کنید
شبی خوش‌ است بدین قصه‌اش دراز کنید

حضور خلوت انس است و دوستان جمعند
و ان یکاد بخوانید و در فراز کنید

رباب و چنگ به بانگ بلند می‌گویند
«که گوش هوش به پیغام اهل راز کنید»

به جان دوست که غم پرده بر شما ندرد
گر اعتماد بر الطاف کارساز کنید

میان عاشق و معشوق فرق بسیار است
چو یار ناز نماید، شما نیاز کنید

نخست موعظهٔ پیر صحبت این حرف است
که «از مصاحب ناجنس احتراز کنید»

هر آن کسی که در این حلقه نیست زنده به عشق
بر او نمرده، به فتوای من نماز کنید

وگر طلب کند انعامی از شما حافظ
حوالتش به لب یار دل‌نواز کنید

Companions, undo the knot of the friend's tress;
it is a pleasant night: make it longer with this tale.

It is the presence of an intimate retreat, and the friends are gathered;
recite the verse against the evil eye and close the door.

The rebec and the harp are saying in a loud voice:
"Lend the ear of your understanding to the message of those who know the secret."

By the life of the friend, grief will not tear your veil
if you put your trust in the kindnesses of the One who sets things right.

Between the lover and the beloved there is a great difference;
when the friend shows disdain, you must show your need.

The first counsel of the elder of the company is this:
"Keep away from the companion who is not of your kind."

Whoever in this circle is not alive through love,
over him, though he has not died, say the funeral prayer by my ruling.

And if Hafez should ask a reward of you,
refer him to the lip of the friend who soothes the heart.
