Ghazal 24: Do not ask obedience, vows or right conduct of me, the drunkard

Do not ask obedience, vows or right conduct of me, the drunkard,
for I was famed for draining the cup on the day of the first covenant.

The moment I made my ablution at the fountain of love,
I said the four last prayers over everything that exists.

Give wine, that I may give you news of the secret of destiny:
whose face I fell in love with and whose scent made me drunk.

The mountain's waist is less than an ant's waist here;
do not despair of the door of mercy, O wine worshipper.

Apart from that drunken narcissus, may no evil eye reach it,
no one has sat at ease beneath this turquoise dome.

May my life be the ransom of her mouth, for in the garden of sight
the gardener of the world never tied a lovelier bud.

Through the fortune of your love Hafez became a Solomon:
that is, of union with you he holds nothing in his hand but wind.

Interpretation of the fal

Your attachment has deep roots and will not be removed by advice or prohibition. You have given up a great deal for what you love. Though you have nothing in hand yet, do not despair of God's mercy, before which a mountain weighs no more than an ant. Be honest with yourself and do not pretend to a virtue you do not feel.
