Ghazal 256: I will give you a piece of advice; listen, and make no excuses

I will give you a piece of advice; listen, and make no excuses:
accept whatever the kindly counsellor tells you.

Take your enjoyment of union with the faces of the young,
for the cunning of the old world lies in ambush for life.

To lovers, the bliss of both worlds is worth a grain of barley,
for this is a small commodity and that is a great gift.

I want a pleasant companion and a well-tuned lute,
so that I may tell my pain to the wail of bass and treble.

I am resolved to drink no wine and commit no sin,
if destiny falls in with my plan.

Since they made the eternal apportionment without our being present,
if a little is not as you would wish, do not find fault.

Cupbearer, pour wine and musk into my cup as into the tulip,
for the image of my beloved's mole does not leave my mind.

Bring the cup of lustrous pearl, O cupbearer;
tell the envious one: "See the vizier's generosity, and die."

Meaning to repent, I have put the cup from my hand a hundred times,
but the cupbearer's glances never let up.

Wine two years old and a beloved of fourteen:
that is enough company for me, of small and of great.

Who is going to hold back our runaway heart?
Send word: a Majnun has broken loose from his chain.

Do not speak of repentance in this banqueting place, Hafez,
for the cupbearers with bow-shaped brows will shoot you with arrows.

Interpretation of the fal

Accept the advice of those who care for you, and make no excuses. Make the most of the days of youth and joy, for time lies in ambush. Accept what was allotted to you from the beginning, and do not find fault if something is not to your liking. The resolutions you have made and broken so often show that you need to be honest with yourself.
