Ghazal 259: It is I who have opened my eyes upon the sight of the friend
It is I who have opened my eyes upon the sight of the friend;
what thanks can I give you, O Maker of ways who cherishes his servant?
Tell the one who is in need of affliction not to wash the dust from his face,
for the dust of the street of need is the alchemy of desire.
Do not turn your reins away from the difficulties of the Path, O heart,
for the man of the road gives no thought to rise and fall.
If the lover does not make his ablution with the blood of the liver,
by the ruling of the mufti of love his prayer is not valid.
In this station of appearances take up nothing but the cup;
in this small house of playthings play no game but love.
With half a kiss buy a prayer from one who has heart,
which will keep the malice of your enemy from your soul and body.
It has cast the murmur of love into Hejaz and Iraq,
the melody of the song of Hafez's ghazals from Shiraz.
Interpretation of the fal
You have reached the meeting or the goal you wanted; give thanks to God. On this road, humility and need are what bring success, so do not be ashamed of them. Do not turn away from difficulties. This world is no more than a plaything: give yourself in it only to love, and win for yourself the prayers of people of heart.
