Ghazal 264: Rise, and pour the water of joy into the bowl of gold
Rise, and pour the water of joy into the bowl of gold,
before the bowl of the skull becomes a scoop for dust.
In the end our dwelling is the valley of the silent;
for now, send a tumult up into the dome of the heavens.
An eye whose glance is stained is kept far from the face of the beloved;
look upon his face from a mirror that is clean.
By your green head, O cypress: when I have turned to dust,
put pride out of your head and cast your shade upon this dust.
Our heart, which was wounded by the snake of your tress,
send it with your lip to the healing house of the antidote.
You know that the ownership of this field gives nothing lasting;
cast a fire from the heart of the cup upon all possessions.
I bathed in tears, for the people of the Path say:
"First become clean, and then turn your eye upon that Pure One."
O Lord, that self-regarding ascetic who saw nothing but faults,
cast the smoke of a sigh upon the mirror of his understanding.
Like the rose, at his fragrance tear your garment open, Hafez,
and cast that robe in the path of that nimble figure.
Interpretation of the fal
Life is short and it all ends in silence, so while you are here, live gladly and let the world hear your voice. The world's wealth and property do not last: do not set your heart on them. To reach what is pure and precious, first clear your own heart and your own gaze. Do not take the fault-finding of the self-important seriously.
