Ghazal 266: My heart has run away to a gypsy-like one who stirs up tumult
My heart has run away to a gypsy-like one who stirs up tumult,
false in promises, a killer in manner, and full of deceit.
May a thousand garments of piety and cloaks of abstinence
be the ransom for the torn shirt of the moon-faced.
I will carry the image of your mole with me to the grave,
so that from your mole my dust may be mingled with perfume.
The angel does not know what love is, O cupbearer;
call for a cup, and pour rose-water on the dust of Adam.
Tie a cup to my shroud, so that on the morning of the Gathering
I may drive from my heart with wine the terror of the Day of Resurrection.
Poor and weary I have come to your door; have mercy,
for I have nothing to hold on to but devotion to you.
Come, for the voice of the tavern said to me last night:
"Stay in the station of contentment, and do not run from what is decreed."
Between the lover and the beloved there is no barrier;
you yourself are your own veil, Hafez: rise from between.
Interpretation of the fal
You have given your heart to someone who is beguiling and unfaithful, and still you do not let go. Love is a human gift: do not think little of it. Be content with what is decreed and do not run from it. There is no obstacle between you and what you seek except yourself: set self-regard aside, and the way will open.
