Ghazal 275: Sufi, pick a rose and give the patched cloak to the thorn

Sufi, pick a rose and give the patched cloak to the thorn;
give this dry asceticism away for a wine that goes down sweetly.

Lay the idle talk and ecstatic sayings on the path of the harp's tune;
give the rosary and the scholar's shawl to wine and the one who drinks it.

The heavy asceticism that beauty and cupbearer will not buy,
in the circle of the meadow give it to the breeze of spring.

Ruby wine has waylaid me, O prince of lovers;
forgive my blood for the sake of the dimple in the friend's chin.

O Lord, in the season of the rose pardon your servant's sin,
and overlook this affair for the sake of the cypress by the stream.

O you who have found the way to the spring that is sought,
from this sea grant one drop to me, who am as dust.

In thanks that your eye has never looked on the faces of idols,
commend us to the pardon and kindness of the Lord.

Cupbearer, when the king drinks the wine of morning,
say: "Give the golden cup to Hafez, who keeps vigil through the night."

Interpretation of the fal

Set dry severity and outward show aside, and enjoy the simple beauties of life. If you have slipped, hope for God's forgiveness, especially in these good days. Ask someone who has reached the goal to share a little of it with you. Your wakeful nights and your efforts will not go unrewarded.
