Ghazal 295: At dawn, drawn by the scent of the rose garden, I went for a while into the garden

At dawn, drawn by the scent of the rose garden, I went for a while into the garden,
to treat my troubled mind, like the heart-lost nightingale.

I was gazing at the display of the red rose,
which in the dark night was as bright as a lamp.

It was so proud of its own beauty and youth
that it had a thousand kinds of unconcern for the nightingale's heart.

The graceful narcissus had let water run from its eye in longing;
the tulip, from passion, had laid a hundred brands on its heart and soul.

The lily had drawn out its tongue like a sword in reproach;
the anemone had opened its mouth like those who carry tales.

One, like the worshippers of wine, had a flagon in its hand;
another, like the cupbearer of the drunken, held a cup in its palm.

Count gladness and pleasure and youth a prize, like the rose,
for, Hafez, the messenger's duty is only to deliver the message.

Interpretation of the fal

You have gone to nature, or to some pleasant place, to find calm. There you see that the beautiful are proud of themselves and those who love are in pain, and everyone is busy with their own affairs. This fal carries a simple lesson: treasure youth and joy while they last. What needed to be said has been said: accepting it is up to you.
