Ghazal 299: If you drink wine, pour a draught out on the earth

If you drink wine, pour a draught out on the earth;
what is there to fear from a sin that brings some good to another?

Go, enjoy whatever you have, and feel no regret,
for time strikes with the sword of destruction without regret.

By the dust of your feet, O my tenderly nurtured cypress,
on the day of my death do not draw your foot back from my dust.

Whether one of hell or one of heaven, whether human or fairy,
in the creed of them all, to hold back is unbelief on the Path.

The architect of the heavens has so closed the road of this six-sided temple
that there is no way out from under this pit of a monastery.

The wiles of the daughter of the vine waylay reason marvellously;
may the trellis of the vine never fall to ruin until the Resurrection.

By the road of the tavern, Hafez, you have left the world gladly;
may the prayers of the people of heart be the companion of your pure heart.

Interpretation of the fal

Enjoy what you have and do not leave others without a share: giving, however little, is good, and meanness is approved by no creed. Time shows mercy to no one, so do not waste the opportunity. There is no way out of this world: live in it, then, with a pure and glad heart, so that a good name and people's prayers remain after you.
