Ghazal 309: The play of love, and youth, and wine the colour of ruby
The play of love, and youth, and wine the colour of ruby;
a gathering of friends, a companion of one mind, and drinking without end.
A cupbearer with a mouth of sugar and a minstrel sweet of speech;
a companion good in his deeds and a table friend of good name.
A beauty who in grace and purity is the envy of the water of life;
a stealer of hearts who in loveliness makes the full moon jealous.
A banqueting place that pleases the heart, like the palace of highest paradise;
a rose garden around it, like the garden of the Abode of Peace.
Those seated in rows all well-wishers, and the attendants all courteous;
friends who keep secrets, and companions who wish their friends well.
Wine rose-coloured, bitter, sharp, pleasant to drink and light;
its sweetmeats from the ruby lip of the beloved, its talk of the uncut ruby.
The glance of the cupbearer with sword drawn to plunder the reason;
the tress of the beloved spread as a snare to hunt the heart.
A man of subtle wit and jest, like sweet-spoken Hafez;
a teacher of giving who lights the world, like Haji Qavam.
Whoever does not want this pleasure, may gladness be ruined for him;
and whoever does not seek this gathering, may life be forbidden to him.
Interpretation of the fal
This fal is all joy and success: youth, like-minded friends, companions of good name and everything needed for happiness are at hand. Value this time and this company, and do not turn away from them. Make the most of the company of generous and well-spoken people. Whoever does not want such a blessing has deprived himself of life.
