Ghazal 310: Welcome, bird of blessed footstep and fortunate message!

مرحبا طایر فرخ پی فرخنده پیام
خیر مقدم چه خبر؟ دوست کجا؟ راه کدام؟

یا رب این قافله را لطف ازل بدرقه باد
که از او خصم به دام آمد و معشوقه به کام

ماجرای من و معشوق مرا پایان نیست
هر چه آغاز ندارد نپذیرد انجام

گل ز حد برد تنعم نفسی رخ بنما
سرو می‌نازد و خوش نیست خدا را بخرام

زلف دلدار چو زنار همی‌فرماید
برو ای شیخ که شد بر تن ما خرقه حرام

مرغ روحم که همی‌زد ز سر سدره صفیر
عاقبت دانهٔ خال تو فکندش در دام

چشم بیمار مرا خواب نه در خور باشد
من له یقتل داء دنف کیف ینام؟

تو ترحم نکنی بر من مخلص گفتم
ذاک دعوای و ها انت و تلک الایام

حافظ ار میل به ابروی تو دارد شاید
جای در گوشهٔ محراب کنند اهل کلام

Welcome, bird of blessed footstep and fortunate message!
You are well come: what news? Where is the friend? Which is the road?

O Lord, may eternal kindness be the escort of this caravan,
through which the enemy fell into the snare and the beloved into our wish.

The story of me and my beloved has no end;
whatever has no beginning does not admit of an ending.

The rose has carried her indulgence too far: show your face for a moment.
The cypress is preening and it is not seemly: for God's sake, walk out.

Since the tress of the beloved is commanding the infidel's girdle,
be off, O shaykh, for the cloak has become unlawful on our body.

The bird of my spirit, which used to sing from the top of the heavenly tree,
was at last cast into the snare by the grain of your mole.

Sleep is not fitting for my sick eye;
how should one sleep who has a wasting sickness that kills?

You show no mercy to me, your sincere friend; I said:
"That is my plea, and here you are, and such are the days."

If Hafez leans towards your eyebrow, it is fitting;
men of learning take their place in the corner of the prayer niche.
