Ghazal 320: Last night with a flood of tears I was barring the road of sleep
Last night with a flood of tears I was barring the road of sleep;
in memory of the down of your cheek I was drawing a picture upon water.
With the eyebrow of the friend before my eyes and my cloak burnt,
I was drinking a cup to the memory of the corner of the prayer niche.
Every bird of thought that flew up from the branch of speech,
I was striking back again with the plectrum of your tress.
The face of the beloved was showing itself to my sight,
and from afar I was blowing kisses at the face of the moon.
My eye on the face of the cupbearer, my ear on the voice of the harp,
with eye and ear I was drawing an omen on this matter.
The picture of the image of your face, until the hour of dawn,
I was painting on the workshop of my sleepless eye.
At the sound of this ghazal the cupbearer was taking up the bowl;
I was reciting this song and drinking pure wine.
The hour of Hafez was a happy one, and a fal of desire and success
I was casting in the name of the life and fortune of my friends.
Interpretation of the fal
You have stayed awake through a night thinking of someone, and all your thoughts circle around them. Much of what you build in imagination is like a picture drawn on water, yet that very imagining has kept your heart alight. The signs are good and the fal is in your favour. Wish your friends well too: goodwill towards others opens your own fortune as well.
