Ghazal 323: Because of my own short reach I am weighed down
Because of my own short reach I am weighed down,
for I am put to shame before those who are tall of stature.
Unless a chain of hair should take me by the hand,
I shall raise my head in madness.
Ask my eye about the state of the heavens,
for from night until day I count the stars.
I kiss the lip of the cup in thanks for this:
that it made me aware of the secret of the times.
If I have said a prayer for the sellers of wine,
what of it? I am paying what I owe for a kindness.
I am very thankful for my own arm,
that I do not have the strength to harm people.
I have a head that is drunk, like Hafez, and yet
I put my hope in the kindness of that other Lord.
Interpretation of the fal
You are ashamed of your own weakness and short reach in the face of what you want, and you lie awake at night. But the very fact that you have no power to harm anyone is itself a blessing: be grateful for it. Be thankful to those who have been good to you. For all your shortcomings, keep your hope in God's kindness.
