Ghazal 330: You are like the morning, and I am the candle of the solitude of dawn
You are like the morning, and I am the candle of the solitude of dawn;
smile, and see how I give up my life.
Such is the brand that your unruly tress has left on my heart
that my grave will become a bed of violets when I am gone.
On the threshold of my hope in you I have opened the door of my eye,
so that you might cast one glance; you have cast me out of your sight.
What thanks shall I give you, O troops of grief? God pardon you,
that on the day when I have no one, you at least do not leave me.
I am the slave of the pupil of my eye, which, for all its black heart,
rains a thousand drops when I count over the pain of my heart.
Our idol shows himself to every gaze, and yet
no one sees this grace that I am looking upon.
If the friend passes over the dust of Hafez like the wind,
out of longing, in the heart of that narrow place, I will tear my shroud.
Interpretation of the fal
You are so attached that one smile from that person would take your life, yet they do not give you a glance. In this loneliness only sorrow has stayed with you. You see something in them that others do not see, and this love will remain with you to the end. Even so, do not give yourself up wholly to grief, and know that your faithfulness will not go unanswered.
