Ghazal 339: When the image of your face passes through the rose garden of the eye

When the image of your face passes through the rose garden of the eye,
the heart comes after it, to look, towards the window of the eye.

I see no view that is worthy to be your resting place;
of all the world I have only this one appointed corner of the eye.

Come, for to scatter rubies and pearls at your arrival
I am drawing them from the treasury of the heart to the window of the eye.

At dawn my flowing tears were bent on laying all to ruin,
had the blood of my liver not caught hold of the skirt of the eye.

On the first day that I saw your face, my heart was saying:
"If any harm comes of this, my blood is on the head of the eye."

Last night, until dawn, in hope of the good news of union with you,
I set the bright lamp of the eye in the path of the wind.

In the name of humanity, do not strike the aching heart of Hafez
with the heart-piercing, man-felling arrow of the eye.

Interpretation of the fal

All your gaze and thought are on someone whose sight took your heart, and you have no place worthy of them but your own eyes. For their coming you have made ready everything your heart holds. You have stayed awake through the nights in hope of news of them. Ask them to be kind to you and not to wound your aching heart any further.
