Ghazal 345: Without you, O walking cypress, what am I to do with rose and rose garden?

Without you, O walking cypress, what am I to do with rose and rose garden?
Why should I stroke the tress of the hyacinth? What am I to do with the cheek of the lily?

Alas, because of the taunts of the ill-wisher I did not see your face;
I have not a face of iron, like the mirror: what am I to do?

Be off, adviser, and do not find fault with those who drink the dregs;
it is the Ordainer of destiny who does this: what am I to do?

When the lightning of jealousy leaps out like this from the hiding place of the unseen,
tell me yourself what I, whose harvest is burnt, am to do.

Since the king of the Turks approved of it and threw me into the pit,
if the kindness of Rostam does not take me by the hand, what am I to do?

If the fire of Sinai gives no help with even one lamp,
what am I to do for the dark night of the Valley of Safety?

O Hafez, highest paradise is the house I have inherited;
what am I doing, living in this ruined halting place?

Interpretation of the fal

Without the one you love, no beauty means anything to you. Ill-wishers have put distance between you, and you feel cornered and helpless. Part of what is happening to you is destiny, and other people's blame is misplaced. To get free you need the help of someone strong and chivalrous: look for it. Your true place is far higher than where you are now.
