Ghazal 346: I am not the kind of rend who gives up beauty and the cup

I am not the kind of rend who gives up beauty and the cup;
the censor knows that I seldom do such things.

I, who have so often found fault with those who repent,
would be mad if I repented of wine in the season of the rose.

Love is the single pearl, I am the diver, and the tavern is the sea;
I have plunged my head in there, and who knows where I shall bring it up?

The tulip holds a cup, the narcissus is drunk, and we bear the name of sinners;
I have many a case to plead, O Lord: whom shall I make judge?

Draw in your reins for a moment, O my Turk who sets the city in uproar,
so that with my tears and my face I may fill your road with gold and jewels.

I, who have treasures of the rubies and garnets of my tears,
when would I look to the bounty of the sun of the lofty star?

When the east wind has washed the book of the rose with the water of grace,
call me crooked of heart if I look at the page of any volume.

The covenant and promise of the sky deserve no great trust;
I will make my pact with the measure and my terms with the cup.

I, who in beggary hold the treasure of a king in my hand,
when would I covet the turning of a sky that rears the base?

Though I am covered in the dust of poverty, shame on my aspiration
if I wet my skirt with the water of the spring of the sun.

If the kindness of the friend approves of lovers being in the fire,
I am mean of eye if I so much as look at the spring of paradise.

Last night his ruby lip was making promises to Hafez, but
I am not one to believe such tales from him.

Interpretation of the fal

Be honest with yourself: you are not going to give up what makes your heart glad, so do not pretend otherwise. You have plunged into the road you chose and must go on to the end. Do not trust the promises of fortune or of the powerful, and keep your aspiration high: for all your lack of means, you hold a treasure in your heart. And do not be quick to believe the sweet promises you have heard.
