Ghazal 348: I will make my eye a sea and throw patience out into the desert

I will make my eye a sea and throw patience out into the desert,
and in this affair I will cast my heart upon the sea.

From my straitened, sinful heart I will draw such a sigh
that it sets fire to the sin of Adam and Eve.

The source of gladness is the place where the keeper of the heart is;
I am striving, so that I may perhaps cast myself there.

Loosen the tie of your robe, O moon who wears the sun for a cap,
so that, like your tress, I may cast my passion-stricken head at your feet.

I have been struck by the arrow of the sky; give me wine, so that, drunk,
I may tie a knot in the belt that holds the quiver of the Twins.

I will pour a draught from the cup over this moving throne;
I will send the clamour of the harp up into this enamelled dome.

O Hafez, since to lean upon the days is error and mistake,
why should I put off today's pleasure until tomorrow?

Interpretation of the fal

It is time to take the plunge and put fruitless patience aside. Your happiness is where the one you love is: try to get yourself there. Do not fear the blows of fortune, and go forward with passion and daring. Tomorrow cannot be relied on: do today what your heart wants.
