Ghazal 37: Come, for the palace of hope stands on very weak foundations

Come, for the palace of hope stands on very weak foundations;
bring wine, for the foundation of life is on the wind.

I am the slave of the spirit of one who, under the blue wheel,
is free of everything that takes the colour of attachment.

How shall I tell you what good news the angel of the unseen world
gave me last night in the tavern, drunk and ruined as I was?

He said: O high-sighted royal falcon whose seat is the Lote Tree,
your perch is not this corner of the town of sorrow.

They are whistling for you from the battlements of the Throne;
I do not know what has befallen you in this place of snares.

I will give you a piece of advice; learn it and act on it,
for I have this saying from the elder of my path.

Do not grieve over the world, and do not forget my counsel,
for I have this subtle point of love from a wayfarer.

Be content with what is given and smooth the frown from your brow,
for the door of choice has not been opened to me or to you.

Do not look for a kept promise from the weak-natured world,
for this old crone is the bride of a thousand grooms.

There is no sign of promise and faith in the smile of the rose;
lament, heart-lost nightingale, for there is cause to cry.

Why do you envy Hafez, you of the feeble verse?
A welcome in hearts and grace of speech are God-given.

Interpretation of the fal

Do not build on far-off hopes, for the world stands on weak foundations. You were made for something higher than your present troubles, so do not think little of yourself. Stop grieving over worldly matters, be content with what you have, and smooth your brow. Do not expect loyalty from the world, and ignore other people's envy.
