Ghazal 382: When you come, recite a Fatiha over one who is worn out with sickness
When you come, recite a Fatiha over one who is worn out with sickness;
open your lips, for the ruby of your lip gives life to the dead.
To the one who came to ask after me, recited the Fatiha and is going,
say: "Wait one breath, for I am sending my spirit on before him."
O you who are physician to the sick, look at the surface of my tongue,
for this breath and smoke from my breast is the burden of the heart upon the tongue.
Although the fever warmed my bones with love and went away,
the fire of love does not leave my bones as the fever did.
The state of my heart, because of your mole, has its home in the fire;
my eye, because of your two eyes, has become sick and weak.
Bring my heat down with the water of my two eyes, and see
whether my pulse gives any sign of life.
The one who was always handing me the glass for pleasure's sake,
why does he keep carrying my glass to the physician?
Hafez, your verse has given me a draught of the water of life;
leave the physician and come and read the recipe for my draught.
Interpretation of the fal
Your sickness or weariness comes from the heart, not the body, and its cure is a visit and a kind word from the one you love. Ask them to call on you and to stay a little longer. The physician has no remedy for this pain. Good words and poetry are a balm for your heart: take refuge in them, and keep your hope of recovery.
