Ghazal 389: Like the rose, at every moment, catching your scent
Like the rose, at every moment, catching your scent,
I tear the garment on my body from collar to hem.
You would say the rose had seen your body, for in the garden,
like those who are drunk, it tore the garment on its body.
I can hardly bring my life safe out of the hands of grief for you,
but you carried my heart away from me with ease.
At the word of enemies you turned away from your friend;
no one turns enemy to a friend.
Your body within your garment is like wine within the cup;
your heart within your breast is like iron within silver.
Rain down tears, O candle, from your bloodshot eye,
for the burning of your heart has become plain to everyone.
Do not act so that from my breast a liver-burning sigh
rises up like smoke through the window.
Do not break my heart and do not throw it underfoot,
for it has made its home in the tip of your tress.
Since Hafez has bound his heart to your tress,
do not cast his affairs underfoot in this way.
Interpretation of the fal
You gave your heart easily and now find it hard to get free of the grief of it. The one you love has turned away from you on the word of ill-wishers: tell them that a friend should not be abandoned at an enemy's say-so. They are gentle on the surface and hard at heart. Ask them not to break your heart and not to treat your affairs with contempt.
