Ghazal 40: Thanks be to God that the tavern door is open

Thanks be to God that the tavern door is open,
for my face is turned in need toward that door.

The jars are all seething and roaring with drunkenness,
and the wine that is there is the real, not the figurative.

From him comes all drunkenness, pride and haughtiness;
from us, all helplessness, weakness and need.

The secret we have not told and will not tell to others
we shall tell the friend, for he is the keeper of secrets.

The account of the curls of the beloved's tress, loop within loop,
cannot be cut short, for this story is long.

It is the burden of Majnun's heart and the curl of Layla's tress,
the cheek of Mahmud and the sole of Ayaz's foot.

Like the falcon I have stitched my eyes shut to the whole world,
since my eye is open on your beautiful face.

Whoever comes into the Kaaba of your street
is, by the qibla of your eyebrow, in the very act of prayer.

O members of the gathering, of the burning of poor Hafez's heart
ask the candle, for it is burning and melting.

Interpretation of the fal

The door you were hoping for is open to you; be thankful. What you seek is real, not an illusion. Approach it with humility, and tell your secret only to someone who can be trusted with it. Give your whole attention to your goal and close your eyes to everything else; your sincerity is being noticed.
