Ghazal 401: When I become the dust of his road, he shakes his skirt free of me
When I become the dust of his road, he shakes his skirt free of me;
and if I say, "turn your heart," he turns his face from me.
He shows his rosy face to everyone, like the rose;
and if I say, "cover it again," he covers it from me.
I said to my eye: at least look your fill at him once.
It said: do you want him to draw a river of blood from me?
He thirsts for my blood, and I for his lip; how will it turn out?
Shall I take my desire from him, or will he take justice from me?
If, like Farhad, I give up my life in bitterness, it does not matter;
many sweet stories will remain behind from me.
If I die before him like the candle, he will laugh at my grief;
and if I take offence, his tender mind will take offence at me.
Friends, I have given my life for his mouth; see
how for so slight a thing he holds back from me.
Be patient, Hafez, for if the lesson of grief goes on like this,
love will tell a tale of me in every corner.
Interpretation of the fal
The more humble and pleading you are, the more that person draws away. They are kind to everyone except you, and this has hurt you. Insisting and complaining do no good and push them further off. Be patient and keep your dignity. Even if you do not get what you want, this faithfulness will leave you a good name.
