Ghazal 421: The door of the house of the Magians had been swept and sprinkled
The door of the house of the Magians had been swept and sprinkled;
the elder sat there and had called out a welcome to old and young.
The jug-bearers had all girded themselves in his service,
yet with the crown of their caps they had raised a canopy above the clouds.
The gleam of cup and goblet had hidden the light of the moon;
the cheeks of the Magian boys had waylaid the sun.
The bride of fortune, in that bridal chamber, with a thousand airs,
had curled her lovelock and sprinkled rose-water on the rose petal.
The angel of mercy had taken up the cup of pleasure
and, from the draught, sprinkled rose-water on the faces of houri and fairy.
From the uproar and riot of the sweet-acting beauties,
sugar was broken, jasmine scattered, the rebec played.
I gave my greeting, and with a smiling face he said to me:
"O you who suffer the morning after, penniless and wine-struck,
who does what you have done, out of weakness of will and judgement?
You have left the treasure house and pitched your tent on a ruin.
I fear they will not give you union with wakeful fortune,
for you are asleep in the arms of a luck that is drowsy.
Come to the tavern, Hafez, that I may show you
a thousand ranks drawn up of prayers that are answered."
The sky leads the spare horse of Shah Nosrat al-Din;
come and see the angel with his hand on the stirrup.
Wisdom, which is inspired by the unseen, to win honour
has given his threshold a hundred kisses from the roof of the Throne.
Interpretation of the fal
A place full of joy and openness stands open to everyone, and you have stayed away from it. Out of weakness of will you have abandoned the treasure and settled for little. Until you wake up yourself, wakeful fortune will not turn to you. Go back to the right road: there your prayers are answered. A strong and highly placed support is within reach: draw close to it.
