Ghazal 423: Last night I went to the tavern door, heavy with sleep
Last night I went to the tavern door, heavy with sleep,
the skirt of my cloak wet and my prayer mat stained with wine.
The young Magian who sells the wine came up, mocking,
and said: wake up, traveller stained with sleep.
Wash yourself first, and then step into the tavern,
so that this ruined monastery is not stained by you.
How long, in desire for the lips of sweet youths,
will you keep the jewel of the spirit stained with molten ruby?
Pass through the stage of old age in purity, and do not
stain the robe of white hair as you did the robe of youth.
Become pure and clear, and come up out of the well of nature,
for water stained with earth gives no clearness.
I said: O soul of the world, it is no fault in the book of the rose
if in the season of spring it is stained with pure wine.
Those who know the road of love, in this deep sea,
were drowned and yet were not stained by the water.
He said: Hafez, do not sell riddles and fine points to your friends.
Alas for this kindness, stained with every sort of reproach.
Interpretation of the fal
Before you enter an important matter or a place of worth, prepare yourself and cleanse your heart. It is time to give up the habits of your younger days and spend the years ahead cleanly. Do not make excuses or deceive yourself. One can be in the midst of life and not be stained by it. Accept a friendly reproach: it comes from care.
