If you will not drink wine to the voice of nightingale and turtledove,
how am I to cure you? The last remedy is the cautery.
Lay up a store of the colour and scent of the season of spring,
for the highwaymen of the winter months are coming close behind.
When the rose has thrown off her veil and the bird has called its call,
do not put the cup down from your hand: what are you doing? Come, come.
When did the splendour of sovereignty and of beauty ever stay?
Of the throne of Jamshid and the diadem of Kay only a word remains.
To keep a treasury for one's heirs is unbelief,
by the word of minstrel and cupbearer, by the ruling of drum and reed.
Time gives nothing that it does not take back again;
do not look for generosity from the base, for what he has is nothing.
They have written on the portico of the Garden of Refuge:
whoever bought the blandishments of the world, woe to him.
Generosity is gone; I will cut the talk short: where is the wine?
Give it, to the joy of the spirit and soul of Hatim Tai.
The miser will never catch the scent of God; come, Hafez,
take the cup and practise generosity, and I will stand surety.
Interpretation of the fal
The time for happiness is short, and winter follows spring: make use of it now. What you have is for using and for giving, not for hoarding and leaving to others. Time takes back whatever it gives, and no one's splendour has lasted. Do not expect help from the mean. Be generous yourself: its good result is assured.
