Ghazal 433: O you who have drawn a veil of musky down across the moon

O you who have drawn a veil of musky down across the moon,
you did a kindness: you cast a shade over the sun.

What will the freshness and colour of your cheek do to us!
For now you have cast the trick of a fine picture on the water.

You have carried off the ball of beauty from the beauties of Khallokh: be glad;
ask for the cup of Kay Khosrow, for you have thrown down Afrasiyab.

Everyone played at love with the candle of your face in some way;
among them all you threw the moth into agitation.

You laid the treasure of your love in our ruined heart;
you cast the shadow of fortune on this corner of desolation.

Beware of the water of that cheek, by which
you left lions with thirsty lips and threw heroes into the flood.

You bound the sleep of the wakeful, and then, with a painted fancy,
you cast suspicion on the night-walkers of the troop of sleep.

You threw the veil from your face for one glance where beauty is shown,
and out of shame you sent houri and fairy behind the veil.

Drink wine from the world-seeing cup, for on the throne of Jamshid
you have cast the veil from the face of the beloved we sought.

With the deceit of your languid narcissus and wine-loving ruby,
you threw Hafez, the recluse, into wine.

And to hunt the heart you threw the chain of your tress on my neck,
like the lasso of the king who is master of men.

O judge with the splendour of Darius, you who have brought
the crown of the sun down in homage to the dust of your threshold;

Nosrat al-Din Shah Yahya, you who with the edge of your sword
threw the enemy of the kingdom, like fire, into water.

Interpretation of the fal

Your fortune is high: someone or something of value has entered your ruined life and made it flourish. You have prevailed over your rivals: be glad and make use of the victory. What you wanted has shown itself. This attachment has upset the calm of your seclusion, but your good lies in it. You have a powerful supporter.
