Ghazal 435: Do not tell the pretender the secrets of love and drunkenness
Do not tell the pretender the secrets of love and drunkenness,
so that he may die unaware, in the pain of worshipping himself.
Become a lover, or else one day the business of the world will end
and you will not have read the design of the purpose in the workshop of being.
How well that idol put it last night in the gathering of the Magians:
"What business have you with unbelievers, if you do not worship idols?"
My sultan, for God's sake, your tress has broken us;
how long will a black slave go on reaching so far?
How can one stay veiled in the corner of safety
while your narcissus eye tells us the secrets of drunkenness?
I had foreseen these troubles that have arisen, on that day
when in your pride you would not sit with us for a moment.
Love of you will hand Hafez over to the storm;
you imagined that, like lightning, you had leapt clear of this struggle.
Interpretation of the fal
Do not share the secret of your heart with those who make claims and do not understand. Without love you get nothing out of life: give your heart. Either be wholly on a road or step off it: half-heartedness is no use. You had seen the signs of this difficulty beforehand. Do not suppose you have easily escaped this struggle: stay calm and alert.
